Microsoft has significantly sped up the Windows Update service with the release of Windows 11 24H2. The company reports that this update reduces installation and reboot times while also decreasing CPU usage.
Typically, Microsoft releases cumulative security updates every month, including both security fixes and non-security features. The latest 24H2 version introduces new methods for updating the OS to make the process more efficient. This includes parallel processing of components, scalable use of system RAM, and optimized cache memory, which together allow updates to install up to 45% faster on some systems while using 25% less CPU power. Microsoft shared virtual machine test data comparing these improvements with the older 22H2 update for reference.
Optimized Download Size
The 24H2 update also reduces download sizes by about 200 MB. This was accomplished by removing the need to re-download built-in OS components if the installed version already contains the necessary updates.
NIXSOLUTIONS adds that the new update management scheme extends to the Microsoft Edge browser. “For Windows 11 version 24H2, we have expanded this scheme to include the Microsoft Edge browser, saving about 200 MB on some systems,” commented Microsoft representative Steve DiAcetis.
