NIX Solutions: OpenAI Forms Partnership with Hearst Media

OpenAI has formed a new partnership with Hearst Media, the company behind well-known publications such as the Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Elle, and others. This collaboration allows OpenAI products like ChatGPT and SearchGPT to feature content from more than 20 magazine brands and over 40 newspapers. This deal brings a broad range of Hearst content directly to AI platforms, expanding the media reach for both companies.

Key Terms of the Agreement

Under the terms of this partnership, ChatGPT content will contain relevant links that redirect users to the original sources from Hearst. However, this deal only involves Hearst’s magazines and newspapers, leaving out other areas of the media holding’s business operations.

This collaboration is part of a broader trend where media outlets enter into agreements with AI startups to distribute their content. CNBC has noted that this recent deal follows a growing pattern in the industry.

OpenAI’s Growing List of Media Partners

This isn’t OpenAI’s first foray into such partnerships. In August, they announced a similar deal with Condé Nast, granting access to media brands like Vogue, The New Yorker, GQ, Vanity Fair, and Wired. Earlier, in June, OpenAI and Time entered a strategic agreement allowing OpenAI to access Time’s vast archive, covering over 100 years of articles.

NIX Solutions adds that May saw a partnership with News Corp., giving OpenAI access to current and archived content from The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, Barron’s, New York Post, and others. Around the same time, Reddit also partnered with OpenAI, enabling ChatGPT to train its AI models on content from the social platform.

Meanwhile, leading American media organizations had previously filed lawsuits against OpenAI and Microsoft. These companies were accused of using journalistic materials to train their AI models without compensating the publications.
