NIX Solutions: Grammarly Launches Authorship Tool

Grammarly, a company with Ukrainian roots, is launching a new Authorship tool, aimed primarily at the education sector. According to its website, this innovative feature will work across 500,000 applications and websites, offering valuable insights into the origins of text within documents. The tool is designed to show how much of the content is written by a human, pasted from another source, or generated and edited by artificial intelligence.

Addressing the AI Detection Challenge

As noted by Jenny Maxwell, head of Grammarly for Education, many educational institutions currently lack a consistent and clear policy regarding AI use. This gap often leads to disputes between teachers and students, fueled by the shortcomings of existing AI detection tools that may inaccurately flag student work. Grammarly Authorship seeks to alleviate these issues by providing a final check before submission, helping students ensure their work aligns with instructors’ expectations. Additionally, it offers support for students if their work is flagged as plagiarized or AI-generated, helping to clarify the source of the content.

Features and Availability

Once activated, the new tool will offer several ways to view and share test results:

  • Authorship Analytics: Displays a breakdown of the text’s origins, including general analytics such as total authorship time and the number of active writing sessions.
  • Authorship Report: Provides a color-coded version of the full text, showing which parts were written by a human and which were influenced by AI.
  • Authoring Replay: Offers a complete replay of how the text was developed, with breakpoints to analyze where specific content appeared.

Grammarly will launch this new feature in beta on Google Docs for all its customers starting in September 2024, notes NIX Solutions. By the end of the year, it will be available on Microsoft Word and Pages. We’ll keep you updated as more details emerge.

To remind you, Grammarly, a company with Ukrainian roots, developed a platform to improve written English. According to the company, it is currently used by more than 30 million people, 70,000 teams, and 3,000 educational institutions.
