NIX Solutions: Microsoft to Retire Remote Desktop App

Microsoft will officially end support for the Remote Desktop app for Windows on May 27, 2025. Users must switch to the Windows app to continue accessing Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box computers.

Switching to the Windows App

The Windows app, launched in September, offers key features such as support for multiple monitors, dynamic screen resolution, and streamlined access to cloud PCs and virtual desktops. Microsoft has warned that after May 27, connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked.

It’s important to note that this change does not affect the long-standing Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, which has been part of Windows for over 20 years. This tool will continue to function on Windows 11 beyond the deadline. Until the Windows app gains support for Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), users can still rely on Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection to access other computers.

Future Cloud Integration

The transition to the Windows app suggests that support for personal accounts may be introduced in the future, adds NIX Solutions. Currently, the app only works with work or school accounts. This aligns with Microsoft’s broader vision of moving Windows to the cloud.

As this transition unfolds, we’ll keep you updated on any new developments or additional integrations that may become available.
